Dairy Free Mummy Hot Dogs (Perfect for Halloween)

Three dairy free mummy hot dogs on a white plate next to some fake spiders.

Want to treat your kiddos to a special Halloween dinner? Try these fun dairy free mummy hot dogs! Made with just three ingredients, this recipe is simple and quick to whip up before a night of trick-or-treating.

Ingredient Notes

Here’s a photo of the only three ingredients you’ll need! Be sure to read the ingredient notes for helpful product tips for families with allergies:

A can of crescent roll dough, several hot dogs, and edible eyeballs.

Hot dogs – Many brands of hot dogs will be dairy free. Occasionally, milk is added to hot dogs though, so you must check ingredients. Typically, all-beef hot dogs labeled Kosher will be dairy free. For example, at the time of publish, Hebrew National hot dogs were dairy free and most varieties of Nathan’s hot dogs are also dairy free (except those which have cheese added).

NOTE: Keep in mind hot dogs (and other meat/poultry products) are regulated under USDA which does not fall under FALCPA allergen labeling laws. Most brands still voluntarily comply with those allergen labeling protocols, however if you are anaphylactic to an ingredient, I recommend contacting brands to confirm that they’re dairy free if you are unsure.

Cresent roll dough – Believe it or not, many cans of crescent roll dough do not contain dairy; however you must check ingredients. At the time of publish, Bakehouse crescent roll dough (shown above) from ALDI was dairy free, as was Pillsbury crescent roll dough (though formulations can always change; check labels). You can also make your own homemade dairy free crescent roll dough.

Candy eyes – These are easy to order online or find in the baking section at many major grocery stores. As an alternative, you can add two small dollops of ketchup or mustard to make “eyes” if you don’t have these on hand.

Instructions

This recipe couldn’t be simpler! Once you’ve gathered up your ingredients, open the crescent roll dough and spread it out on cutting board (you may want to lightly flour the board if it tends to stick). Do not break apart the dough at the perforations; instead cut the dough into long strips. Wrap those around the hot dogs, like this:

Now place those on a baking sheet and bake in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes, until the dough has cooked through and is a light golden brown color.

Remove from the oven, pop on two edible eyeballs (or two dollops of mustard for your eyes), and enjoy!

Recipe FAQ

Here are some common questions that may come up as you’re preparing this recipe:

Can you make mummy hot dogs in advance?

You can prepare the hot dogs by wrapping them in crescent dough up to one day in advance, and then refrigerate until you’re ready to bake them. Bake just before serving to ensure the dough is slightly crisp on the outside.

How should you store leftover mummy hot dogs?

If you have any leftover mummy hot dogs, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat them in the oven until the hot dog is warm and until the crescent roll has crisped up again.

Can you use other pre-cooked meats instead of a hot dog in this recipe?

Yes! Feel free to use pre-cooked chicken sausages or another pre-cooked option for this recipe. Do not use raw meat; the baking time is not long enough to cook raw meat.

Can you make vegan mummy dogs?

Sure – use you’re favorite brand of vegan hot dogs to make this recipe, and chose a crescent roll dough that does not contain any animal ingredients.

Allergens in this Recipe

Disclaimer:  Always double check ingredients and labels yourself prior to making a recipe.  While I try to check all ingredients for allergens, there’s always the chance I may miss something, or manufacturer formulations can change.

As written and choosing products that don’t contain these ingredients, this recipe should be dairy free, nut free, and egg free.

This recipe does contain wheat/gluten in the crescent roll dough. This recipe may also contain soy in the crescent roll dough, edible eyes, and hot dogs, depending on your choice of ingredients. Check labels carefully and choose appropriate products if soy is a concern.
