Dairy Free Cookies and Cream Milkshake

A dairy free cookies and cream milkshake topped with whipped cream and oreos.

Is there anything better than a delicious dairy free milkshake? This cookies and cream flavored shake contains just four ingredients and is perfect for anyone needing a dairy free dessert. Simple and delicious!

Ingredients and Instructions

Here’s a photo of what you’ll need and selected ingredient notes with product suggestions:

Dairy free ice cream, cookies, oat milk, and dairy-free whipped cream.
  • Chocolate sandwich cookies – I used Oreos, which don’t contain dairy by ingredients. Keep in mind that Oreos may have cross contamination with milk products in some locations, so if you have an anaphylactic allergy, it may be wise to avoid them and look for another brand of sandwich cookie. If you can’t find one, use any allergy-friendly chocolate cookie instead. (For example, Enjoy Life’s crunchy chocolate cookie could work in this shake).
  • Oat milk – Any dairy-free milk works here! Oat milk tends to be a bit creamier than other varieties, so that’s why I chose it for this recipe. I like Planet Oat, Chobani, or Oatly for oat milk.
  • Dairy-free whipped cream – You don’t necessarily need this, but isn’t a milkshake so much more fun with a bunch of whipped cream on top?! My favorite dairy-free whipped cream is the Gay Lea (got it from ALDI) which is what’s in the photo above; I find it works perfectly and dispenses from the can easily. Reddi Whip also makes two dairy-free whipped toppings (an almond-forward version and a coconut-forward version) which are available at most major grocery stores. They seem to have issues sometimes with dispensing; you can reduce these issues by following the instructions for running them under warm water and shaking prior to using.

Once you’ve got all your ingredients, toss 1 cup of ice cream, 3 cookies, and 3 tablespoons of oat milk in a blender cup.

Blend that all up. Add whipped cream and another crushed cookie to the top, and be ready to be wowed by the delicious shake!

Recipe FAQ

Here are some common questions that may come up as you prepare this recipe:

Can you make a milkshake without a blender?

Yes. If you don’t have a blender, place the ice cream in a mason jar (without a lid) and microwave for about 5-7 seconds, until soft but not melted. Add the milk and any add-ins (like crushed oreos), place the lid on the jar, and shake well. Enjoy.

Can you make milkshakes ahead of time?

It’s not recommended to make them in advance. If you need to, you can do so and place it in the freezer until ready to enjoy, and then microwave for a few seconds to make it drinkable. However, this process can result in ice crystals forming and the milkshake won’t be as creamy as freshly made.

Can you add booze to a dairy free milkshake?

Sure – if serving to adults and you want an alcoholic version, try adding some Kahlúa, or a vanilla or cake-flavored vodka. (Double check any brand you are considering purchasing to confirm it is dairy free). Do not add booze if you are pregnant. If you are nursing and choose to drink, wait several hours after drinking until the alcohol has cleared your system before you nurse.

Allergens in this Recipe

Disclaimer: I’ve identified potential allergens below but as always, check the ingredients and labels to verify for yourself.  There’s always I chance I may miss something or that a manufacturer has changed formulations.

As written with the ingredients I chose to use, this recipe is dairy free.

The oat milk ice cream that I used had a cross contamination warning for eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy and wheat. If you are peanut or tree nut free and have an anaphylactic allergy, I recommend looking for other brands of dairy-free ice cream that do not risk cross contamination.

This recipe does contain wheat/gluten (in the Oreos), soy (in the Oreos), and coconut (in the whipped topping). To make this wheat/gluten free and soy free, simply choose an allergen-free chocolate cookie instead of Oreos.
