Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Bars (Dairy Free + Gluten Free)

There’s something so satisfying about a quick homemade dessert! These almond flour chocolate chip bars are exactly that – simple, quick, and delicious. Made with almond flour as the base, they bake up with a chewy, tender crumb. And these bars are both dairy-free and gluten-free.

Ingredient Notes

Here’s a photo of all the ingredients you’ll need, along with selected ingredient notes:

Almond flour, corn starch, baking soda, salt, vanilla, brown sugar, coconut oil, egg, chocolate chips.
  • Refined coconut oil — Refined coconut oil has a neutral flavor, so you won’t taste any coconut in the finished bars. Unrefined (virgin) coconut oil has a distinct coconut flavor that would come through, so I don’t personally recommend it (unless that’s something you’re looking to taste in these bars).
  • Dairy-free chocolate chips – Not all chocolate chips are dairy-free, so you’ll want to look specifically for options that don’t include dairy. My personal favorites are Enjoy Life dark chocolate morsels. Wegman’s brand semi-sweet chocolate chips are also a nice option. Both of these were dairy-free at the time of publish.
  • Cornstarch – This helps keep the bars tender and also acts as a stabilizer. If you don’t have any on hand, you can skip it, but it may slightly change the texture.

Instructions

You’ll find the full recipe amounts and instructions in the recipe card below, but here’s a helpful overview with photos and tips. This recipe is very easy to make!

Start by mixing together the dry ingredients: almond flour, corn starch, baking soda, and salt.

Almond flour, corn starch, baking soda, and salt mixed together in a small bowl.

In another bowl, mix together the coconut oil, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract.

Combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients, then fold in the chocolate chips.

Bar batter in a mixing bowl.

Pour into a greased 8×8 baking dish and bake at 350 degrees F for about 20-25 minutes.

Here’s the key – you need to let these cool fully in the pan before attempting to slice them and eat them. If you try to cut them when they’re warm, they will crumble. (They still taste delicious, but just giving you fair warning, haha).

Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. They also freeze well. Just wrap individually and freeze for up to 3 months (for best quality). Defrost at room temperature when ready to enjoy.

Allergens in this Recipe

Disclaimer: Always double check ingredients and labels yourself prior to making a recipe.  While I try to check all ingredients for allergens, there’s always the chance I may miss something, or manufacturer formulations can change.

As written, this recipe is dairy free, wheat/gluten free, and soy free – as long as you make sure the packaged chocolate chips are free from these ingredients.

This recipe does contain nuts (in the almond flour) and eggs (in the egg). I don’t recommend substitutions for this particular recipe.
